Friday Feature: El Morelense
If forced to choose one of the best bites of food in Utah, it would be the al pastor tacos from El Morelense. The meat is slightly caramelized, topped with pineapple and placed on a soft and fresh corn tortilla. The condiments are complementary, allowing you to put on as much salsa, onion, cilantro and lime as you please. It’s a taco you’ll crave and dream of until your next visit. I promise.
The other tacos, while not as good as the al pastor, are definitely tasty. The chorizo comes in a close second. The highly seasoned meat balances beautifully with the acidic salsas and herbaceous cilantro. If you’re a lengua (tongue) fan, it is a solid taco as well. The meat is fall apart tender and seasoned perfectly.
I’ve also ordered the al pastor huarache, a large oblong piece of cooked masa (similar to a corn tortilla but slightly thicker) topped with meat, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and crema. The salty meat combined with the toppings is a match made in heaven. If you do order this, I suggest sharing it with someone else because it is rather large.
Located inside The Latino Mall off Redwood Road, it has an interesting and fun atmosphere. Seating is cafeteria style, making it feel casual and down to earth. Sometimes when busy, the tables are messy but more times than not it is clean and tidy.
You order at the counter, making service simple and to the point. Staff has always been welcoming and helpful when answering questions.
What it comes down to is this: You need El Morelense in your life.
